Use

This drug is one of the many classes of drugs for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). However, acarbose is only given to people with diabetes mellitus who cannot be treated with other antidiabetic drugs taken. (68th BNF)

Acarbose drugs work in our body by inhibiting the change in sucrose to glucose and fructose. That way, blood sugar levels can be more controlled. (68th BNF)


Side effects

Acarbose drugs should be taken along with food, usually taken together with the first binge when eating. Although it is safe, it should be used with caution, especially if you are pregnant and breastfeeding, have severe kidney and liver problems, or you have a fever, injury, infection, or have finished surgery. Drug Use

This drug interacts with many medicines. These include amylase, protease, lipase, calcium antagonist drugs, aminoglutetimid, okreotid, antihypertensive, antidepressants, estrogen, progesterone, llofibrates, diuretic drugs, drugs that contain thyroid hormones, steroid drugs, and phenytoin.

Concomitant use with these drugs should be avoided. If you do not know the type of drug you are taking along with acarbose, then do not hesitate to consult with your doctor or pharmacist. You are also strictly prohibited from drinking alcohol while consuming acarbose.


Dose

The dosage for this drug is: Adult> 18 years: initial dose of 50 mg daily, which then increases to 50 mg 3 times a day. Then, if needed, it can be increased to 100 mg 3 times a day after 6 to 8 weeks. In addition, this drug can be given a maximum of 200 mg 3 times a day. (68th BNF)


Interaction

This medicine will cause side effects, such as flatulence, runny stools, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. The rare side effects include nausea, abnormal liver function and the appearance of a reaction on the skin.
